Going down the road……

Transfer day from Nanning to Guilin was off and running with another early morning raise and shine routine from our oldest who thinks that getting up before the sun does is funny!  Lets see how that goes once we are back home and school starts back!

For breakfast we decided to change the routine so Savannah and Aiden tagged along with me down to one of the local bakeries to get some fresh items to take back to Declan and Mom.  Once there is brought back memories of the small pastry shop that was just beside the White Swan Hotel in Guangzhou that we frequented on many occasions. The buns with small sausages stuffed and baked inside and the vegetable breads that have the wonderful taste of cold pizza were an instant hit, and along with the Chinese donuts we created a veritable feast for our family!

With breakfast out of the way we packed up and shipped out for our trip to Guilin with Bob around 10:00 am.  Before heading to the bus station, Bob took us to the Nanning Minority Museum so that we could get a better understanding of how Chinese Minorities make up a large part of the regions heritage and the importance it plays still to this day. The new museum was built in 2009, moving from its pervious home in downtown Nanning. It was very interesting with Bob as a guide as he is from Guilin and could expound on many of the things in the displays. The daily lives of the 12 indigenous minorities of China are recreated in many displays. In China, the vast majority of the people are descended from the Han. Anyone who is not of Han descent is considered a minority, and there are several minority groups in China In Guangxi, the primary minority group is the Zhang, and the province is called "the autonomous region of the Zhang people." There are other minority groups from the region as well, though, and the museum represented several different minority cultures.

The museums contains an extensive drum collection, as well as artifacts of everyday objects such as textiles, rituals and music from different minorities, vases and cooking tools, one life-sized display of a minority home as well as several structures typical of homes of the various minority groups. Everything is explained in English and Mandarin on plaques near displays that makes it quite visitor friendly!  Also, if you are not Chinese, be prepared for celebrity status as the local school children will all want to take a picture with you and practice their "hellos" and "good mornings"

After leaving the museum we made a quick stop at the former museum location as there is still an extensive gift shop there where we purchased a few items for the kids so that they can have some things to remember their heritage once we return home.  Then it was on to the bus station!

With a van full of kids and luggage, Bob made it pain free to navigate the crowded bus terminal.  Once the secured the bags and kids near the bus staging area, we procured some KFC snacks for the 4 hour ride to Guilin.  Surprisingly, the ride was quite pleasant, but bumpy, and the loud music videos and kung-fu movies they played on the video system was somewhat overwhelming, but with iPads and other devices of distraction, we made it quite easily!

Once in Guilin, we made our way from the local bus terminal to the Sheraton Hotel where the offloaded our luggage and then met some local friends for a kid friendly dinner at the local McDonalds!  It was so good to see our old friends and to share great stories as well as show off our newest family addition. Savannah has ecstatic to have some girl time with our friends daughters as she has been cooped up with the boys for several days now and adult interaction for us was a great thing as well!

This morning we are off to see some local attractions before a lunchtime meeting with some special people in our extended family.

So till then……

Sleep is overrated......

Unless you are 20 hours and three flights away from home with three kids!  :-)

Let me start this entry with an apology.  We were retired to the room last night I had all intentions of finishing the post before I went to bed.  I had it started and then went to assist Ann Marie with the bath and bedtime duties which concluded with me lying down with Declan as we watched a Thomas movie on the television to assist him in falling asleep......it ended with me waking up around midnight to a dark room, me still dressed and snuggled up to Declan who was sound asleep, just as I had been!  I looked around for Ann Marie and she too was in bed! Oooopppps!  Ann Marie told me this morning that we looked too peaceful to wake up so she left us to sleep.  Thanks Sweet Pea, I needed that rest!

So here we are at 5:30 on Wednesday morning, our last day in Nanning before we transfer to Guilin.

Tuesday was paperwork day here in Nanning so
we rose early to get breakfast in before heading off with Bob. The kids enjoyed cereal and milks in the room while I ran out to grab some things for we adults.  After finishing breakfast and dressing we met Bob downstairs at 10:00 to drive to the Civil Affairs Office to complete the paperwork we started the day before here at the hotel.  For those of you who have adopted from China before you know this as the "Red Finger Day"!  With kids in-tow we entered the building, which is had been recently built and was beautiful, and were taken to the waiting room where there were several other families waiting to complete their paperwork was well.  The kids played and Mom and I signed and stamped our way through the documents.  We then met with the official who signed off on our paperwork after asking us several questions about our intentions, a few more red finger stamps and one tiny red foot stamp and the adoption was official!  We then drive to the notary to have it authenticated and we were quickly on our way back to the hotel!

Once back at the hotel it was time for lunch!  We decided to go low key so we walked to the Pizza Hut (yes, non adventurous after last nights dinner) and had spaghetti bolognase, pepper steak and rice, and fried rice.  Declan was not too keen on the spaghetti, but the fried rice was a hit!  We loved seeing the menu for Pizza Hut in China and wish the the restaurants in the United States would offer such a variety of food!  I mean, Stuffed Crust Jumbo Shrimp Crown Pizza not only sounded good, but it looked awesome!  Maybe next time that's our dinner!

Naps were in order after lunch as we had been up since 5:00 am (again), so we bedded the children down for naps, then Ann Marie went on a shopping excursion for supplies while I watched the kids and did some work on the PC. After naps the kids played in the room for a while with puzzles, toys and such till the point that Savannah and I ventured out to find us a place for dinner.  We walked up and down the streets here near the hotel and even visited the newest Mall in Nanning that was outstanding!  It had everything from an full size ice rink to a movie theater inside and not to mention any store that you could find in the United States. I was angling to keep Ann Marie out of this one as shopping at a mall with a Gymboree and a Starbucks could proved disastrous!  So Savannah and I settled on a nice German Restaurant just behind the hotel for a change in culinary flavor!

Zur Eiche, or the German Oak in English, was a huge hit with everyone!  From the moment we walked in we were really impressed.  The owner, Ruediger Sonten, came over and spent copious amounts of time chatting with us and telling us all about his history in China and about starting the restaurants both here in Nanning as well as in Yangshuo.  For starters the adults ordered a great German beer called Schneider Weisse Original. A product of the oldest German wheat brewery in the world, Schneider Weisse Original is an amber-colored speciality beer that has been brewed for more than 130 years in accordance with the brewery founder's old, unchanged recipe and is produced just minutes from Rudi's hometown in Germany. For food we order plates of homemade German sausage with sauerkraut and potatoes, Swabian Onion Steak with red wine sauce and swabian noodles, Chicken Fricassee with rice, Kaesespetzel which is swabian cheese noodles with fried onions, and last but not least a Vienna style Schnitzel!  All I can say is that everyone was well stuffed when we departed Rudi's establishment and ready for a good walk back to the hotel!

Once back at the hotel, Savannah had arranged a Skype call to her classroom back at Thales Academy in Apex!  Mrs Gainer and the class called right on time and even though there were a few technical difficulties, the class and Savannah had a great time talking to each other and asking questions about the trip so far.  They even got to see Declan live and in person which seemed to be a real treat! We will try to do this again from Guanzhou where the Internet may be a little more cooperative.

Well, that brings our story full circle.....bath and bedtime duties......zzzzzzzzzzz!

So till next time.....

Michael (why did I not bring my gym clothes!), Ann Marie (mmmm....beer!), Savannah (noodles and cheese please!), Aiden (Im not jealous.....yet!) and Declan (zhè-ge shì wǒ-de)

Asleep in their beds.....

At the end of a very long day, the title says it all!  Everyone is all tucked in their beds for what is hopefully a good nights sleep.

The day started early with everyone up just after 5:00 am local time.  The excitement of the travel to Nanning along with the excitement of the coming day had us all on edge, so there was just no sleeping!   Ann Marie spent the morning repacking our suitcases and organizing the donations we brought with us, I worked on some computer items and got the TV set up to play movies for the kids, and the kids.....well, they just did kid things!

After a couple of hours we broke out of the hotel for exploring the local area as much as we could in a steady torrential rain.  We got some breakfast at the KFC where Aiden and Savannah discovered an indoor play place and some special items on the KFC menu that we are sure are no where to be found in the United States!  After breakfast we shopped at the local Walmart (thanks Mr. Walton!), perused the local mall (where we found out that prices here are not what they used to be!) and then returned back to the hotel to prepare for Declan's arrival.

After a late lunch we were watching a movie when we received a call from Bob, our guide, stating that due to the rain Declan would be meeting us at our hotel rather then us traveling to meet him!  We were totally ecstatic and hurriedly prepared our paperwork and gifts for the meeting that was to take place in less than 30 minutes!  A flush of giddiness and anticipation came over each of us knowing that the time for Declan to join our family was near!

At a little after 3:00 we were in the lobby with Bob when we saw Declan and his attendants approaching though the lobby of the Marriott. Cute as a button in his red button down and trousers he cautiously approached us with that look of "Hey, I know these people", but also with a bit of apprehension. After a short meeting in the lobby, we all retreated to the 18th floor where our room is to complete the paperwork and continue the bonding process. Cookies were shared, books were surveyed and toys were played with....a fitting way to start a lifetime together.

When the formalities were over, the attendants left with only a few tears shed by Declan, at which time Declan, the rest of the family and Bob retreated to our room where the kids began a fast friendship over a Thomas movie and some playtime.  After an hour or so we left for dinner at a local Hunan resturant where we enjoyed a dinner of pork with peppers, beef and vegetables, sweet potato noodles, beef sauerkraut and buns, rice and drinks. A great meal on a special day and we really thank Bob for taking us on this culinary adventure! We also found out that there are many more restaurants on the streets behind the hotel!  Oh boy!

After dinner, another trip to Walmart for some necessities, we retired to the room bedtime.  All three kids were playing well, but the boys took it to another gear while Savannah was in the bath!  When it got to be a little too much, I had to invoke some quick Chinese language lessons and pulled out the phrase "ān jìng yí xià" which means Quiet down please. I knew it worked when Declan both quieted down and repeated it back to me several times! The kids were dressed and prepared for bed and all was going well, right until it was time to go to sleep. Declan's warm bubbly playful self turned to shy and reserved and all he was saying was "No" as we asked him to get into bed and we were replying "Yes", all in Chinese! This went on until he was finally coaxed into bed with a cell phone to play with and then we turned on a Thomas the Tank Engine movie as I laid down in bed with him. Suddenly this was not all that bad and in less than 15 minutes we had one fast asleep little boy!

Now we are all ready for a good nights sleep and another long day tomorrow as we complete all the paperwork!  Now the hard part begins.....the countdown until we bring out little boy home!  So tell everyone that the Kennedy's are one stronger as of today!  12 more days before we land at RDU! But who's counting..........

So until then.........

Mike (Do they have congee at KFC in Raleigh?), Ann Marie (I love Walmart in China!), Savannah (These don't look like Lo-Mien noodles!), Aiden (Why is he wearing my pajamas?) and Declan (wǒ xiǎng hé nǐ jiǎng zhōngwén!)

Thank goodness for housekeeping.....lets see how this looks tomorrow!
Hey, do not take my fudge stripe cookies Mom!
You see, this is how you do level 74 in Cover Orange....
Just pop in a DVD and its instant control!
Don't worry Bob, that replacement Seminole T-Shirt is in the mail!

Declan joins the family!

Welcome Declan Xia Yu Kennedy!

I know its early in the United States, but we wanted to post these photos and a video as soon as possible!

On the road to Nanning....

I woke up this morning at my normal 5:30 and this is what I was greeted with. Another perfect weather day in Beijing. Someone must be smiling on us! The fog and low ceiling from day 1 has been non-existent and has been providing us some very good touring weather.

This was our last day in Beijing and we made the most out of our limited time today!  After breakfast Sarah met us in the lobby to take us to the Temple of Heaven that was just a short subway ride away.  It was a bit brisk this morning, but like the unprepared tourist I am, I braved it in shorts and a t-shirt (that got a lot of stares)!

We had limited time so we focused on the Temple itself and the Circular Mound Alter.  The temple complex was constructed from 1406 to 1420 during the reign of the Yongle Emperor, who was also responsible for the construction of the Forbidden City in Beijing. The Temple of Heaven, literally the Altar of Heaven is a complex of religious buildings situated in the southeastern part of central Beijing. The complex was visited by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for good harvest. Behind the temple itself we found the ovens and fire pots used to prepare the sacrifices (animal) for presentation to the gods inside the temple itself.

After the temple we walked down the hill towards the Circular Mound. The Circular Mound is an empty circular platform on three levels of marble stones, each decorated by lavishly carved dragons. The numbers of various elements of the Altar, including its balusters and steps, are either the sacred number nine or its nonuples. The center of the altar is a round slate called the Heart of Heaven or the Supreme Yang, where the Emperor prayed for favorable weather. Thanks to the design of the altar, the sound of the prayer will be reflected by the guardrail, creating significant resonance, which was supposed to help the prayer communicate with the Heaven. The Altar was built in 1530 by the Jiajing Emperor and rebuilt in 1740

The park surrounding the temple is used today for many activities. We watched locals dancing, signing, playing music, exercising and even match making!  Sarah explained that the parents of children who were not married and thought that they should be took to the park each weekend to seek a mate for their child. It was so strange to see all of these parents milling about looking at small sheets of paper laid on the ground describing their child, much like you would see on an Internet dating site, but I understood their angst and would smile when one would see me reviewing their documents. Maybe China is an untapped market for a savvy entrepreneur who wants to help these parents!

After returning to the hotel via the subway we headed back to our room to pack and prepare for the trip to Nanning. We loaded the kids and an abundance of luggage into the van for the ride to the airport and bid our farewell to Beijing one last time. We really enjoyed our experience and cannot wait until we can bring all 3 kids back the place of their birth for even more education on where it is that they come from.

We took off from the Beijing airport around 3:30 and arrived in Nanning just about 3 hours later to much warmer temperatures and rain!  According to Bob, our guide, there are some monsoonal rains setting in due to Typhoon Son-Tinh so we should prepare to get a little wet! Oh boy! We quickly loaded up and made our way to the Nanning Marriott, a fabulous hotel that more than meets our needs!  After a quick load in and document review, Bob told us to be in the lobby tomorrow at 3:00 pm to being our trip to meet Declan!  Its almost here!  What seemed to be so long ago, the decision to proceed, the medial updates, the application process, the waiting for approval, the steps we have taken so many times will come to an end tomorrow and our family will be complete! Its exciting, its scary and its so close!

But for now, the kids are asleep along with Mom and I sit here in a dark room writing to you. Its a calming thing for me and something I like to do, so I hope you enjoy. So now I will go slip into bed for a long nights sleep and to prepare for the exciting day ahead.......

So till then.......
